Welcome to the Global Philosophy of Religion Project 2

Transforming the philosophy of religion into a truly global and inclusive field.

Our Vision

The Global Philosophy of Religion Project 2 (GPR-2) is a £2.4 million initiative at the Birmingham Centre for Philosophy of Religion. We seek to bring new voices to bear on longstanding questions about spiritual reality. Building on the success of our previous project, this new phase explores deep questions about human purpose, the meaning of life, and what it is to live well. It will consider what role (if any) fundamental spiritual realities like God or other divine entities play in addressing such issues.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Global Perspectives: Engaging with traditions from all over the world, including those at the crossroads between religions, philosophies, spiritualities and ways of life, such as Buddhism, Confucianism, as well as the “spiritual but not religious.”
  • Lived Spirituality: Moving from the abstract to the concrete by considering philosophical questions about religious/spiritual practices.
  • High Quality Research: Supporting leading conceptual research and piloting collaborations between philosophy and science to tackle the “Big Questions” from multi-faith and interdisciplinary perspectives.
  • Public Engagement: Sharing insights with diverse audiences to inspire meaningful dialogue on the philosophy of religion.
  • Teaching and Training: Supporting the next generation of scholars and educators with innovative courses and mentorship opportunities.
